Nowadays humanity is an active participant of the ‘war’ against improper trash disposal practices. There are many reasons why a situation has such sharp character, but it is also necessary to think about existed and possible consequences of previous, today’s and future actions in relate to trash disposal. It is a well-known fact that solid waste products are an environmental issue of greatest concern to residents of developed countries. Thus, the main goals of this paper are to discuss what may constitute improper trash disposal practices and how trash may lead to different human health problems.
Historically, liquid and gaseous wastes, such as industrial water and air pollution were always visible, and they were targeted for priority control and regulation, while solid wastes were always possible to take away or bury away, simply speaking to remove them in one or another way ‘out of sight’. In coastal cities, wastes were often simply dumped into the sea, for instance. Environmental impacts of landfill, in contamination of groundwater and soil, sometimes manifested in a few years or even decades, but they were no less devastating. In such a way in the public mind gradually formed the idea that the landfill into the ground or dumping them into the sea is an unacceptable setting-up of our contemporary problems on the shoulders of future generations. In parallel, there has been projected another trend: the harder it was legislation to control water and air, the greater was made of solid toxic wastes, i.e., all methods of purification of gaseous and liquid mediums led to the concentration of pollutants in the solid: in the silt, sediment, ash, etc.
Answering the question about the way how improper trash disposal became a problem for humanity it is necessary to mention that there are three main reasons for appearance of such situation. Firstly, only for 170 years the Earth’s population has increased from 1 billion people in 1836 to 6,5 billions. Secondly, technological situation changes and develops and so grow our needs. Thirdly, today more than half of humanity lives in cities. Nowadays food, energy and raw materials for industry are concerned on a relatively small territory of many cities, moreover a modern city and its industry processing natural resources into products and wastes. However, wastes were formed anytime and anywhere in human society, but growth of population and technological progress make this problem more urgent than ever before.
According to Zimring (2005), we see that “in developing urban areas massive wastes generally consist of domestic garbage, organic litter, plant leaves, branches, logs, spoiled agric produce, crop residues, bad food materials, pieces of paper, polythene bags, rags, vehicle scraps, used tires, dusts, mire, plastics, glass, blood, bones, animal skins, hides, leather, urinary and fecal materials”. In the case when the above-numerated wastes are improperly disposed they constitute irreparable harm not only to human and animal health, but also to land, water and air. The main cause of disease epidemics and sickness is in fact that sewage, unwanted substances and trash wastes are improperly disposed and not well managed.
Describing the human health problems that trash may lead to if it is improperly disposed off in the community where people reside, we should mention various infectious diseases. It is generally known and it was also previously mentioned that exactly untreated sewage and improper trash disposal are considered to be a reason of environmental health hazards in different communities. Improper trash disposal practices provoke water pollution and it leads in its turn to spread of the infection and various diseases, such as gastroenteritis and infectious hepatitis (jaundice), typhoid, paratyphoid, dysentery, cholera and many others.
The problem of proper trash disposal is widely discussed among scientists and environmentalists, because in a case of a major disaster such as an earthquake or tornado the situation may be worsen exactly with improper trash disposal. For example, Davis-Holland (2009) stated that “sanitary disposal of garbage and refuse requires proper storage of garbage and refuse at home, a regular community collection system and a community disposal site. If a simple community cleanup will not solve the problem, a more extensive solution, such as establishing a landfill site to be used by a large number of people, or retaining the services of a hydrologist or engineer may be required.”
Thinking also about recycling as a variant of problem solution Awomeso (2010) mentioned that “a recyclable material is one that could be molded and reprocessed with the aim of being reused for the same purpose or another purpose in the future. Recycling involves the concentration of use waste materials, their reprocessing (if required) and their subsequent reutilization in place of new materials.”
Thus, taking into the account the above stated information it is possible to conclude the trouble is that the wastes are not only seized vitally important for human space, but also inevitably affect both environment and human health. In such a way our health is in our hands and ecological trainings will help to improve situation on local level.
