Frederick Winslow Taylor was one of the greatest American engineers who formalized and developed scientific management and suggested its four main principles. According to Milton (1957, p. 23) “Taylor was an innovator and an entrepreneur in his field, and he had more than his share of emulators, rivals, and disciples”. Besides, he formulated methods of scientific management based on an analysis of working time and workers’ movements, the standardization of methods and tools. The effectiveness of a collaborative effort in the organization viewed from the standpoint of time and motion.
Scientific management is the process of improving the organization of labor based on scientific achievements and excellence. The term scientific management is usually characterized by improving the organizational forms of living labor in the individual workforce (e.g., a company).
In addition to all above mentioned, scientific management can be defined as “An approach within classical management theory that emphasizes the scientific study of work methods in order to improve worker efficiency” (Bartol and Martin, 1998: p. 41). Thus, the founder of scientific management is considered to be an American engineer Frederick Taylor. Hence, another name of scientific management is Taylorism.
Moreover, there are the problems to be solved within the framework of scientific management:
1. Improvement of the division of labor;
2. Improvement of the workplace;
3. Rationalization of the work methods;
4. Optimization of the labor;
5. Preparation of the workforce.
Taylor’s scientific management includes four main principles that are the basis of modern management:
• Replace rule-of-thumb work methods with methods based on a scientific study of the tasks.
• Scientifically select, train, and develop each worker rather than passively leaving them to train themselves.
• Cooperate with the workers to ensure that the scientifically developed methods are being followed.
• Divide work nearly equally between managers and workers, so that the managers apply scientific management principles to planning the work and the workers actually perform the tasks. (Internet Center for Management and Business Administration [ICMBA], n.d., para. 4).
In other words, an employee must obtain a specific, stressful job or a lesson. Moreover, employees learn the rational methods, which are worked out as a result of timing, or master the labor process through a cinema. As a result, the most capable and tough people are selected. This is important to say that an employee should only be the executor, he is obliged to carry out his mandated task in terms of certain well-defined limits and conditions, which exonerate him from all functions associated with deliberation, calculation and preparation work, all of these functions are assigned to the administrative staff.
This is necessary to mention that principles of scientific management listed above are still applicable in modern organizations and have an important impact not only regionally but also globally. For example, the Multi National Corporation “McDonald’s” adheres to the principles offered by Taylor.
