Child’s readiness for school defines how successful will he or she be in education and what kind of problems could the child face during the process of education. How is it possible to find out if the child is ready for school or not? Let us discuss briefly some researches on this topic.
There are some tests and exams that are called to show a child’s readiness; the tests could show it in total level and help to decide what kind of early care and education the child needs (Murphey & Burns, 2002). Here are some results of National Education Goals Panel (1992): all those tests and developing are trying to show that they are meant to measure what they suppose to measure and are giving a valid criteria for indication of “readiness”. Some of researches are about the discrimination of a child’s validity and readiness. Here are some common opinions that are not always truthful:
• A child from poor family is believed to be less ready than a child from wealthy family; (Resnick et al., 1999; West, Denton, & Germino-Hausken, 2000).
• A child with some earlier experience (like groups of care, Head Start etc.) are more ready than children without such experience (Barnett, 1995; Xiang & Schweinhart, 2002).
In the article “Discriminant Validity of a Community-Level Measure of Children’s Readiness for School” some information from “School Readiness Initiative” (Vermont) is used. This information (“Ready Kindergartners”) contains questions for future kindergarten teachers. Questions cover four criteria of readiness (cited from “Ready Kindergartens”):
• Social and emotional readiness;
• Approaches to learning;
• Communication;
• Cognitive development and general knowledge;
It helps teachers to divide children into some groups: “beginning”, “practicing”, performing independency”, “not observed”.
There are many other researches that aim to improve the mechanism of checking of children’s readiness to school. We hope that it is going to help teachers to be more objective and attentive with children and make right decisions.
