To start with, McDonald’s Corporation is an American corporation, the largest in the world fast-food chain. The company’s headquarters is located in Oak Brook – a suburb of Chicago. The company was founded in 1940 by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald (first restaurant opened in San Bernardino, California). In 1948, it was the first company that formulated the principles of the so-called concept “fast food”. In 1954, Ray Kroc purchased the McDonald brothers’ right to act as an exclusive agent for the franchise. In 1955, he opened his first McDonald’s in the town of Des Plains, Illinois (now – Museum Corporation). In 1961, all rights to the company were fully redeemed by Kroc.
As a result, under the brand name McDonald’s in the middle of June 2009 employed 32,060 restaurants in 118 countries worldwide (including approximately 14,000 of them are located in the U.S.).
McDonald’s Corporation has become one of the most popular fast food restaurants and so popular with the crowds, because it applied the scientific management principles in order to reward employees for meeting goals.
Firstly, McDonald’s always promotes their employees through different effective and practical ways.
For example, McDonald’s applies “…competitive wage and promotion programs, hard work, dedication, motivation and results are recognized and rewarded at McDonald’s. Appreciation comes in many forms – from a simple thank you for a job well done, to restaurant-wide recognition through programs such as the “Employee of the Month.” McDonald’s also offers great incentive programs with access to gift certificates, merchandise, free food, etc.” (McDonald’s Corporation, 2011). Incidentally, McDonald’s managers not only institute the so-called bonus system for the workers in order to perform more efficiently, but also managers apply other different types of systems in order to raise financial incentives, such as a company car program, different recognition programs and others.
Furthermore, Taylor stated that the most important aspect of the labor organization is stimulation. The basic principle is the principle of “a material interest.” Taylor reported that there was no place for charity in the production system. It is necessary to set the price of each type of the labor, because only in this case one can talk about efficiency. The usage of this principle led to the increase of the worker’s individual responsibility. The labor motives are important factors of production, as well as tools or methods of work. The main purpose of production is to increase comfort and welfare of mankind. The mission of scientific management consists of a constructive contribution to the economic and social progress of society.
Secondly, scientifically select, train, and develop each employee are very important principles of scientific management. McDonald’s always applies these principles due to their employees. This is a strong tradition for McDonald’s to train their workers practically and scientifically. Besides, training materials include two main elements. The first one is the core content, which is used globally to maintain a consistent quality of food products and services worldwide, and the second element is regional. This is a specific content depending on the local menu items, the rules of food safety and work experience. Among the most important principles of scientific management are the specialization of work and allocation of responsibility between workers and managers.
Finally, the company has to disclose the so-called standard method of performing each task more effectively. No matter a worker is a cook or just a staff, every kind of work must have a regulatory performance standards and written rules. Taylor assigned the major role in the organization to the administration and managerial staff, whose principal function is to plan the production process and the implementation of total control over all links of production. At the same time, Taylor discovered the important role of the “human factor”, i.e. the employee’s identity. This is very important to encourage the most innovative and hardworking employees. This is necessary to arrange the workers to certain jobs and instruct each specific labor functions for the proper operation of the company. The division of labor involves the separation of the major works aimed directly at the processing of products from the subsidiary – preparatory and auxiliary works, which are intended for the waste disposal, delivery of materials, tools, etc. This helps to improve the use of working time of skilled workers.
In addition, this is important to adhere to the statement “uniform and equitable distribution of responsibilities between workers and managers”. McDonald’s Corporation strictly follows the above-stated principles and, thus, it succeeds in its production and activity.
In summary, this is possible to conclude that owing to the concept of scientific management, enterprise management has become widely recognized as an independent field of a research. Scientists and practitioners saw that the methods and approaches used in science and technology can be effectively used in practice for achieving the goals of the enterprise. There is no doubt that Taylor has made a huge contribution to the formation of a new worldview that is associated with a radical restructuring of views on the role and function within the institutional arrangements. Taylor and his followers laid the foundations of modern and scientific management.
In addition to the above-stated information, it should be noted that Taylor’s system is the basis for further improvement of the organization’s work on a scientific basis, particularly in the deployment of the scientific and technological revolution, accelerating upgrade of technical and technological methods of production. Modern scientific management includes organizational and technical, techno-economic and psycho-physiological aspects of work organization and management.
