How to Write a Response Essay
A response essay is, in fact, writing your personal viewpoint and personal learning regarding the book, paper, novel, poem, essay, article, etc. in question and the ideas and values contained therein. In other words, a response paper is a critique or evaluation of the author’s literature work.
When it comes to its structure, like any essay, it features an introduction paragraph, the main body and the summarizing paragraph. Generally speaking, a good response essay should also give the answers to the following questions:
- How do you feel about the reading?
- What do you agree or disagree with?
- How may you identify with the situation?
- What is the best way to evaluate the story?
Since it is your personal response to the specific literature work, it is highly recommended using personal statements, including I think, I believe, to my point of view, as for me, I feel that, it seems that, I see that, and I am sure that. Besides, to make the essay look more interesting and connected, you should also use some link words, such as: in addition, moreover, by the way, what is more, to sum up, however, and finally. As to the paper length, in general, a response essay is less than four pages.
