The effectiveness of business communication is very important in the contemporary business environment. Problems in communication evoke internal conflicts in organizations and put under a threat their stable development. In this respect, it is possible to refer to the virtual meeting involving Sam, Pablo and Lifang Lin, which have failed because of the poor communication and substantial cultural differences between participants of the meeting. Therefore, participants of the meeting should elaborate more efficient communication strategy to conduct the meeting constructively and to reach positive outcomes of the meeting.

First of all, it is important to dwell upon obstacles in communication. In this respect, it is important to place emphasis on the fact that participants of the meeting belong to different cultural groups. Therefore, they have different communication styles as well as cultural norms and traditions that naturally raise substantial obstacles on the way to the effective communication.

Furthermore, the poor communication is caused by the inability of meeting participants to listen to each other. In fact, participants of the meeting stand for their own position, paying little attention to arguments of other participants of the meeting. Such deconstructive ambiance prevented the effective communication and led to the overall failure of the meeting.

In addition, participants of the meeting suffered from the lack of mutual respect at certain instance show in the course of the meeting. However, what was even more obvious was the competition between participants of the meeting. In fact, participants of the meeting attempted to take the lead and dominate on the meeting, especially Sam and Pablo. Such competition created unfavorable ambiance in the course of the meeting.

Offensive remarks made the meeting and communication even more destructive. In this respect, I would perceive references to my professional skills and abilities as extremely offensive. I could not stand criticism in regard to my professional skills and abilities. In such a context, personal remarks sound quite offensive too but they reveal the low level of cultural development of offenders.

The exclusion from the meeting would be the most offensive thing that could have occurred in the course of communication. In such a situation, I would think of consistent change of relationships with my colleagues, reevaluation my work in the company and, probably, I would consider the possibility of changing the workplace.

If I was an additional person, I would attempt to ease the situation and to help participants of the meeting to start communicating, instead of arguing and offending each other.

Pablo, Sam, and Lifang Lin should be more respectful in relation to each other and they should develop a constructive dialogue to make their communication effective.

Five strategies of effective communication: transparency, conflict avoidance, appeal to authority, negotiating a compromise, offering alternatives. Transparency is essential for the efficient communication because it helps participants of the meeting to feel confident in each other. Conflict avoidance would help to minimize the risk of conflicts and offensive remarks in the course of the meeting. Appeal to authority would re-establish discipline and unite participants of the meeting. Negotiating a compromise would help participants to come to agreement on arguable issues. Finally, offering alternatives would contribute to the constructive communication and development of effective decisions in the course of the meeting that would make the meeting’s ambiance and outcomes positive.
